The International: The Epic Tale Behind the World's Largest Dota 2 Esports Tournament

Following a year-long hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, The International, the world's largest Dota 2 esports tournament, has made a grand comeback in Bucharest, Romania. As we witness the eleventh edition of this prestigious competition, eighteen professional gaming teams are set to compete for glory and the coveted Aegis trophy.

The journey begins with a brief exploration into Dota 2a highly popular real-time strategy game that bls elements of tower defense and multiplayer online battle arena MOBA. In each match, two teams of five players control unique fantasy characters like mages, beasts, and assassins, all ming to destroy the opposing team's Ancient, a massive structure in their base.

Dota 2 was originally a Defense of the Ancients DotA mod for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos by Blizzard Entertnment. In 2003, an anonymous developer known as Eul created this mod that would later pave the way for countless clones upon the release of The Frozen Throne expansion pack.

Fast-forward ten years after DotA's creation, IceFrogthe designer behind one of these spinoffscollaborated with game studio Valve to bring Dota 2 into existencea standalone sequel to the original DotA. Since then, it has grown immensely in popularity and stands as the second most-played game on Steam with over 700,000 concurrent players in a single hour.

The International's inception was a move by Valve to promote their game when Dota 2 debuted two years before its official release during Gamescom in Cologne, Germany. Now an annual event since then, eighteen teams from North America, South America, Europe, and Asiasuch as Natus Vincere Ukrne, Vici Gaming China, Team Liquid Netherlands, Evil Geniuses United States among otherscompete fiercely for the title of Dota 2's best team.

Funding for The International since its third edition has been crowd-sourced through an in-game battle pass system called The Compium. This innovative approach enabled Valve to accumulate millions for prize pools, with this year's tournament rsing a staggering $40 millionthe largest prize pool ever recorded.

Let's look at who might take home the Aegis trophy this year:

OGA two-time International champion from 2018 and 2019and has dominated in other Valve-sponsored Dota 2 tournaments like the Frankfurt Major 2015, Mars Dota League Macau.

PSG.LGDa team with a history of success including first-place victories at Epicenter XL 2018 and WePlay AniMajor Kiev. They placed third or better twice previously at The International in both 2018 2019 editions.
