The base of a Dance Dance Revolution lies scattered on the floor, flocks of whiteboards roll through the quad, and over 280 teams of Rioters gather in offices worldwide. It's Thunderdome - an innovative event where creativity reigns.
In Los Angeles, a diverse array of projects is underway. From mixing pnts to coat custom figurines for our iconic Champions to strategizing on enhancing internal processes or creating new streaming extensions, the atmosphere buzzes with innovation and collaboration.
Eric Riot Dankatron Danker, Head of Technology at Riot Games, reminisces about the inception of Thunderdome over a decade ago. The idea was born during the early stages of League of Legs when the team faced challenges in prioritizing urgent issues amidst intense game development pressure.
“Thunderdome is akin to a hackathon,” he reflects. “But unlike traditional game jams focused solely on creating new games, our objective is broader. We m to improve anything that enhances player experience or streamlines internal operations, fostering an environment where innovation can thrive.”
The essence of this unique event lies in its commitment to making improvements through collective effort. While some projects might lead to direct game content enhancements such as Proving Grounds evolving into the beloved Howling Abyss map, the primary focus is on internal development.
It encompasses a spectrum of outcomesfrom fruitful experiments that may not materialize exactly as envisioned but offer valuable insights and learnings. Others, once conceptualized during Thunderdome sessions, eventually turn into reality through the marination of ideas over time.
The power of Thunderdome is in its ability to ignite creativity among Rioters. It provides a space for collaboration, encouraging dream-sharing and forging connections between colleagues that might not have interacted otherwise. This event promotes a culture where innovation isn't confined to formal settings; a casual conversation can spark ideas just as effectively.
The final day of Thunderdome, marking the culmination of 48 hours packed with brnstorming and execution, sees teams come together for presentations that embody this spirit. These science frs showcase projects ranging from technological innovations to process improvements, sharing successes, challenges faced, and valuable lessons learned.
This year, we recognized the exceptional creativity, passion, and dedication shown by our teams through awards. These accolades celebrate not only completed projects but also the spirit of collaboration that drives us forward as a community.
As we reflect on the recent iteration of Thunderdome, it's clear that its impact exts far beyond the event itself. Projects born from this unique atmosphere continue to shape our ecosystem, enhancing the player experience and optimizing internal workflows across Riot Games. And for those fortunate enough to visit our campus during this time, they might encounter POPSTARS on our DDR - a testament to the 48-hour innovation marathon that brought it to life.
