Dive into the Dynamic Era of Competitive Dota 2
Navigating through the expansive world of professional video games can be overwhelming, with numerous tournaments and growing prize pools offering a multitude of opportunities. To better compreh this thriving landscape, it may prove illuminating to explore one of its oldest and most lucrative members: Dota 2.
Originally released by Valve Corporation in 2013 as a sequel to the community-created mode from Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, which boasted such an active player base that Valve decided to expand upon its concept into a standalone game. Dota 2 serves as a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena MOBA where over 400,000 unique players log in dly. Similar gameplay to Capture the Flag but with the objective of destroying your adversary’s flag rather than capturing it.
The excitement surrounding Dota 2 is further enhanced by Valve's hosting of The International tournament since its beta stage in 2011, which featured a staggering $1.6 million prize pool. The innovation here lies not only in Valve's annual contribution but also through the concept of Battle Passes that have now become synonymous with modern gaming environmentsa concept widely emulated today.
Starting from 2013, Dota 2 introduced the Battle Pass system to offer content for players who could earn cosmetic rewards by playing. For those preferring convenience or having more financial resources at their disposal, the Battle Pass also allowed instant access to these rewards with the purchase of one. Remarkably, Valve took it a step further by allocating an additional 25 from all Battle Pass sales towards The International's prize pool on top of its standard $1 million contribution every year.
As sales and competition grew exponentially over time, Dota 2's prize pools reached unprecedented levels, with the total surpassing $40 million during The International 10 in 2021. This growth was complemented by the introduction of Majors, smaller tournaments that began operating under Valve’s supervision starting from 2015. These events provided teams and organizations with up to seven opportunities each year to showcase their skills, with prize pools historically ranging between $500,000 to $3 milliona significant shift in depency for top performers who no longer relied solely on a single event's outcome.
The Dota Pro Circuit DPC, initiated in 2017, marked another milestone as teams were officially ranked based on their performance at Majors and invited to compete in The International. However, Valve made an unexpected announcement on September 14th stating that they would be ing the Dota Pro Circuit this year, paving way for a new era of possibilities.
The removal of strict supervision requirements by Valve has opened up immense opportunities for event organizers looking to participate in Dota tournaments. The barrier to entry has been dismantled, allowing companies to innovate with their events and productionsming to cater both to teams and fans alike. This move signifies an exciting chapter ahead as the Dota community anticipates the growth of tournaments, which are now free from the constrnts previously set by Valve.
As The International 12 unfolds, enthusiasts around the world eagerly awt the thrilling displays of domination and unexpected upsets that define a professional Dota season's climax. Withum’s Esports Services Team joins this fervent audience in anticipation for what lies aheadembracing the dynamic era of competitive Dota 2.
