Diving into the Era of Competitive Dota 2: A Fresh Perspective on Esports
Navigating through the rapidly expanding world of professional video gaming, which includes hundreds of titles hosting tournaments with increasing prize pools and opportunities, might leave one feeling overwhelmed. However, to gn a better understanding of this ecosystem, it's beneficial to look at one of its oldest and most lucrative games: Dota 2.
Dota 2 Defense of the Ancients was officially released by Valve Corporation in 2013 as an expansion from a community-made game mode called Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. The community's active player base was so significant that it prompted Valve to develop their own standalone game, with over 400,000 unique players logging in dly. Similar to Capture the Flag but with the goal being to destroy your opponent's flag instead of capturing theirs, Dota 2 is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena MOBA.
Valve demonstrated excitement for the game by hosting The International tournament in 2011 while Dota 2 was still in beta phase, offering a $1.6 million prize pool. Since then, Valve has continued to host this annual event with an innovative approach: crowdsourcing. Starting from 2013, they introduced the Battle Pass - a players that rewards them with cosmetic items for playing the game. Players could also opt for instant rewards by paying for what they desired, and 25 of these sales went towards increasing The International's prize pool on top of Valve's initial contribution over $1 million. This strategy led to an explosive growth in both sales and competition until in 2021, the total prize pool for The International surpassed $40 million.
In addition to its annual showcase, smaller tournaments known as Majors began to flourish starting from 2015. These events offered teams and organizations up to seven more chances each year to prove themselves agnst prizes historically ranging from $500,000 to $3 million. This setup shifted the landscape by providing a stable economy for Dota with opportunities beyond just one major payout based on performance at The International. Teams could now demonstrate their skills throughout the year through these smaller tournaments, leading to a healthier ecosystem.
Previously supervised under Valve's management as part of the Dota Pro Circuit DPC since 2017, teams were ranked based on Major placements to earn invites to The International for that specific year. On September 14th, Valve announced that they would be discontinuing the DPC this year. This might appear like the of competitive Dota but in fact it heralds a new era; the barrier to organizing tournaments has been drastically lowered. In the past, organizers had to adhere to Valve's requirements for events such as team invites and formatting to ensure good optics for the company. Now, any event organizer can take part in this action. This means that tournament organizers are free to provide productions tlored to both teams and fans however they see fit, leading to greater competition and opportunities within the industry.
The 12th edition of The International has just begun, setting the stage for thrilling matches across a variety of games from Dota 2 and beyond. With total market investments reaching billions of dollars, Esports is no longer just an alternative form of entertnment but a revolutionary means through which young talent can make careers that once required traditional athletic prowess.
In this era of Dota 2 and beyond, the industry continues to redefine itself with unprecedented growth, innovation and opportunities for both players and viewers alike.
